What Deepavali means
Deepavali means a row of lamps. On the darkest night of the year, the Ashvayuja amavasya, every home is lit with lamps. Darkness stands for ignorance and the lamp for knowledge, which is why we pray "tamaso ma jyotirgamaya": lead us from darkness to light.
In Telugu homes Deepavali begins with Naraka Chaturdashi: an oil bath before dawn, Lakshmi puja in the evening, rows of clay lamps on doorsteps and walls, and the children's crackers. The sacred month of Karthika begins the day after.
The stories of Deepavali
Narakasura vadha: Narakasura, the son of Bhudevi, grew arrogant with his boons and tormented the devas and held sixteen thousand princesses captive. His boon said he could die only at his mother's hand, so Satyabhama, an incarnation of Bhudevi, fought alongside Sri Krishna and killed him. Telugu tradition says lamps were lit on that chaturdashi to celebrate; Satyabhama's courage is still a favourite of Telugu stage plays and Harikathas.
Rama's return: in the North Indian telling, Ayodhya lit lamps to welcome Rama, Sita and Lakshmana home after the victory over Ravana.
Lakshmi's appearance: this amavasya is remembered as the day Sri Mahalakshmi rose from the churning of the ocean of milk, so we invite her into our homes on this night.
Naraka Chaturdashi: the morning rituals
- Rise before sunrise. Elders apply sesame oil to the heads of the children and the family.
- Rub on nalugu (gram flour and turmeric) and take the abhyanga snanam, believed to equal a bath in the Ganga.
- After the bath the women of the house give harathi to the men; everyone wears new clothes.
- Light a lamp to God, draw muggulu at the door and take the blessings of elders.
Deepavali Lakshmi puja, step by step
- Before evening, clean the house, tie a mango-leaf thoranam at the door and draw a muggu at the entrance.
- Spread a red cloth on the puja seat, pour rice, set a kalasam and place Lakshmi and Ganapati idols or photos.
- Worship Ganapati first and say the sankalpam (today, this tithi, for our family's welfare).
- Offer Lakshmi the sixteen-step puja: turmeric, kumkum, lotus flowers, akshatalu; recite the Lakshmi Ashtottaram or Sri Suktam.
- Many families also remember Kubera and honour the account books, cash box and jewellery.
- Naivedyam: payasam, ariselu, laddu, jaggery and fruit.
- At pradosha kalam (after sunset) light the lamp before God first, then clay lamps at every corner, doorstep and the tulasi kota.
- Give the mangala harathi, bow together as a family, and only then the crackers.

Telugu Deepavali customs
Dibbu dibbu Deepavali: on Deepavali night children in Andhra villages swing burning gogu (jute) stalks and sing "dibbu dibbu deepavali, malli vachche nagula chavithi". The light is believed to show the way to the ancestors.
Kedareswara vratam: many Telugu families observe the Kedareswara (Kedara Gowri) vratam on the Deepavali amavasya and tie a sacred thread of twenty-one strands.
Food: ariselu, kajjikayalu, sunnundalu, gavvalu and boondi laddu are Deepavali specials.
The new son-in-law: on the first Deepavali after a wedding, Telugu families invite the new son-in-law home and honour him with new clothes and gifts.
A safe Deepavali
Burst crackers only with an adult present and keep a bucket of water nearby. Wear cotton. Choose low-noise crackers for the elderly, small children and animals. Clay lamps are kinder to the environment.
