Why Vijayadashami

Ashvayuja Shukla Dashami is the day of victory: Durga destroyed Mahishasura after nine days of battle, and Sri Rama defeated Ravana. The Mahabharata adds that the Pandavas, their exile over, took back the weapons they had hidden in a Shami tree on this day. So anything begun today is believed to succeed.

In Telugu homes Vijayadashami means the farewell puja to the Mother, the evening puja at the Jammi tree, giving Jammi leaves to elders as "gold" and taking their blessing, looking for the Palapitta bird, and Alai Balai embraces. In Vijayawada Kanaka Durga appears as Rajarajeswari, and Dasara ends with the teppotsavam on the Krishna.

How to do the Jammi puja

In the evening, at the Vijaya muhurtham, go with the family to a nearby Jammi (Shami) tree.
Pour water at its foot, worship it with turmeric, kumkum, akshatalu and flowers, and light a lamp.
Recite the "Shami shamayate papam" shloka and walk around the tree three times.
Pluck Jammi leaves, place some before God at home and give the rest to elders as "gold", touching their feet.
Seeing a Palapitta (Indian roller) on the way back is believed to bring a year of good fortune.
Embrace family and friends (Alai Balai), let go of old quarrels and share sweets.

Dasara traditions

Ayudha puja: on Mahanavami vehicles, tools, shop scales, books and computers are cleaned and worshipped with turmeric, kumkum and flowers: a day to thank everything that helps us work.

Palapitta: seeing the Palapitta (Indian roller), Telangana's state bird, on Dasara is thought lucky; folk tradition says Rama saw one before setting out to fight Ravana.

Alai Balai: on Dasara relatives, friends and neighbours embrace and let old misunderstandings go, a Telangana custom.

New beginnings: aksharabhyasam, a new business, a new vehicle or a new course of study are all auspicious to begin on Vijayadashami.
