What Diwali means

Deepavali means a row of lamps. On the darkest night of Kartik amavasya every home glows with diyas. Darkness stands for ignorance and the lamp for knowledge, so we pray: tamaso ma jyotirgamaya, lead us from darkness to light.

Diwali is the festival of Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, and Ganesha, lord of wisdom. Traders open new account books on this day, and homes are cleaned, decorated with rangoli and filled with new clothes and sweets.

The stories of Diwali

Shri Ram returns to Ayodhya: after fourteen years in exile and the victory over Ravana, Shri Ram, Sita and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya on this day. The people lit rows of ghee lamps to welcome them, and Deepavali has been celebrated ever since.

Samudra manthan: on Kartik amavasya Goddess Lakshmi rose from the churning of the ocean and chose Lord Vishnu, which is why Lakshmi is worshipped on Diwali night.

Narakasura vadh: on Choti Diwali Shri Krishna, with Satyabhama, killed Narakasura and freed sixteen thousand captive women.

Diwali Lakshmi-Ganesh puja vidhi, step by step

  1. Before evening, clean the whole house, tie a mango-leaf toran at the main door and draw a rangoli.
  2. Spread a red cloth on the puja chowki, place Lakshmi and Ganesha idols or pictures and set a water-filled kalash beside them.
  3. Take water, akshat and a flower in your hand, make the sankalp, and worship Ganesha first.
  4. Offer Lakshmi roli, turmeric, akshat, lotus or red flowers, perfume and cloth; recite the Shri Suktam or a Lakshmi mantra.
  5. Remember Kubera and also honour the safe, account books, pen and jewellery.
  6. Offer bhog: kheel-batashe, laddoos, sweets, fruit and paan.
  7. In pradosh kaal light the big lamp before God first, then diyas in every corner, at the doors, on the roof and near the tulsi.
  8. The whole family sings the Lakshmi aarti, takes the elders' blessings, and only then the fireworks.
Puja items: Lakshmi-Ganesha idol or picture, red cloth, chowki, kalash, mango leaves, coconut, roli, turmeric, akshat, lotus / red flowers, garland, incense, camphor, ghee or oil, clay diyas, wicks, kheel-batashe, sweets, fruit, betel leaves and nuts, coins, account book.
ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं कमले कमलालये प्रसीद प्रसीद श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं ॐ महालक्ष्म्यै नमः
O Mahalakshmi who dwells in the lotus, be pleased with us and bless our home with happiness and prosperity.

Diwali traditions

On Dhanteras people buy new utensils, gold or silver, and in the evening a lamp for Yama is lit outside the house facing south.

On Diwali night the main door is kept open so that Goddess Lakshmi may enter, and in many homes one lamp burns all night.

On Govardhan Puja a small Govardhan hill is shaped from cow dung and worshipped, with the Annakut offering of many dishes. On Bhai Dooj sisters apply a tilak to their brothers and feed them.

A safe Diwali

Always burst crackers with an adult present and keep a bucket of water nearby. Wear cotton. Choose low-noise crackers for the elderly, small children and animals. Clay diyas are the kindest to the environment.
