About the temple
High on a hill in the Nallamala forest above the Krishna river (Patala Ganga), Srisailam is the rare shrine that is both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha. Telugu devotees call it the Kailasa of the South.
The legend
Hurt when Ganesha won the race around the world, Kumaraswamy left for the Krauncha mountain. Shiva and Parvati followed to be near their son and stayed here as Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba. The goddess took the form of a bee (bhramara) to slay the demon Arunasura, hence her name.
