About the temple
The Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotram opens with 'Lankayam Shankari Devi'. Devotees worship her as Shankari Devi in the Koneswaram temple complex on Swami Rock, a cliff jutting into the sea on Sri Lanka's east coast.
The legend
The ancient Koneswaram temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in the 17th century, and the original seat is said to lie under the sea; the shrine on the same rock was rebuilt in the 20th century.
