About the temple
Between the Nar and Narayan peaks on the Alaknanda, at about 3,100 m, Badrinath is the northern abode of the Char Dham and one of the 108 Divya Desams. The black saligram image sits in meditation; the temple opens from around April or May until November.
The legend
Nara and Narayana performed penance here, and Lakshmi shaded the meditating Vishnu as a badri (jujube) tree, hence Badrinath. Adi Shankara is said to have recovered the image from the Narada Kund and reinstalled it.
