About the temple
The Lord here is regarded as the elder brother of Tirumala's Srinivasa, and the shrine is called the Tirupati of the South. All offerings are cooked without salt, hence 'Uppili Appan'; Tirumala vows may be fulfilled here.
The legend
Bhumi Devi was born as the sage Markandeya's daughter. When the Lord came to marry her, the sage said she was too young even to know how much salt to add; the Lord replied that he would gladly eat food without salt.
