About the temple
The linga worshipped by Sri Rama himself: both a Jyotirlinga and the southern abode of the Char Dham. Its pillared corridors are the longest of any temple in India, and pilgrims bathe in 22 sacred wells.
The legend
Returning from Lanka, Rama wished to worship Shiva. When Hanuman was delayed bringing a linga from Kailasa, Sita shaped one from sand (the Ramalinga) and Rama consecrated it. Rama ordered that Hanuman's Vishwalinga be worshipped first, a custom still kept.
