About the temple
On an island between the Kaveri and Kollidam, Ranganatha reclines on Adisesha: the first of the 108 Divya Desams, called Bhuloka Vaikuntham. With seven enclosing walls it is among the largest functioning Hindu temple complexes in the world.
The legend
The image of Ranganatha worshipped by Brahma passed to the Ikshvaku kings and, through Rama, to Vibhishana. Carrying it to Lanka, Vibhishana set it down here and it would not move; the Lord stayed, facing south towards Lanka.
