About the temple
On the Arabian Sea shore, Somnath is the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Destroyed and rebuilt many times through history, it stands as a symbol of unbroken faith; the present temple was rebuilt and consecrated in 1951.
The legend
Cursed by Daksha to waste away, the Moon god (Soma) worshipped Shiva here and was released from the curse. Shiva therefore stays here as Somanatha, the Lord of Soma.
